First Bluebird of the year spotted in Medicine Hat

Reviewing eBird for recent Mountain Bluebird sightings, we were delighted to find the first sighting of the year for our region has now long passed!

Dan Schiebelbein reported a Mountain Bluebird with photo as part of their eBird Checklist - 5 Feb 2023 - Medicine Hat--Police Point Park with the following comment:

“Continuing” Observed 2 west of the Nature Centre when I first arrived…saw 2 a couple of hours later on the east side of the parking lot…will assume it’s the same pair.

Digging into this sighting, this comment caught our eye:

Male; With flock of American Robins. First seen in Park on Dec. 31 and has been seen intermittently ever since.

Milton Spitzer - eBird Checklist - 6 Mar 2023 - Medicine Hat--Police Point Park

This goes to show that it is never too soon to have your nest boxes ready for the bluebirds return! Thanks to everyone that shares their sightings and photos on eBird. This is such a valuable source of citizen science data.
