In 1974 our Society’s foundations began thanks to the steadfast efforts of Duncan Mackintosh.

According to a 1989 article in the Edmonton Journal, he started building nest boxes after being asked by the Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society to help address the rapidly declining numbers of of bluebirds in Alberta.

Within four years an enthusiastic group of four volunteers helped to establish the Mountain Bluebird Trail extending from Lethbridge to Waterton - with 800 nest boxes!

Since that time, the number of nest boxes has grown to an average of 3,000 which have supported many (many) thousands of Mountain Bluebirds and other cavity-nesting bird species.

As we prepare for our soon-approaching 50th anniversary, we are looking to recount the highlights and history of our Society’s impact.

We are asking for you to share your stories, photos, and history of the Mountain Bluebird Trails Conservation Society!

Help us document our history and the impact over the years. Share your story in the comments below or email us with interesting information for inclusion in our history project.

We know we stand on the shoulders of giants, please help us recognize them! Thank you in advance to everyone that contributes.
