Another successful orientation day!

The Mountain Bluebird Trails Conservation Society (MBTCS) hosted another successful Trail Orientation Day in June, giving participants an opportunity to learn about monitoring bluebird trails and observe Mountain Bluebirds at several stages of development.

Cold, wet weather had taken a toll on Jim’s trail, and sadly, several nestlings did not survive. While nature can be harsh, it is also resilient. Some of the pairs that lost their young were already rebuilding their nests, offering hope that they may raise another brood this season.

Participants observed bluebird eggs, newly hatched chicks and two active nests containing six and seven nestlings. There was also plenty of other wildlife to see, including a rabbit, deer, a rattlesnake, an Eastern Kingbird, a Lark Sparrow, pelicans and a bumblebee collecting pollen from vetch. Thank you to everyone who attended and brought such enthusiasm, curiosity and interest in Mountain Bluebirds. Orientation days provide an important opportunity to share knowledge, build monitoring skills and inspire continued stewardship of Alberta’s bluebirds.
