180 new Mountain Bluebird nest boxes ready for installation in Southern Alberta

A large grouping of newly built mountain bluebird nest boxes constructed by Doug Friebel with assistance from Rick Williams prior to delivery and installation.

The Mountain Bluebird Trails Conservation Society (MBTCS) is preparing for another nesting season with the completion of 180 new mountain bluebird nest boxes. The boxes were built by volunteer craftsman Doug Friebel with assistance from Rick Williams, following funding support from the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta.

Once construction was complete, the nest boxes were grouped together for a final inspection before delivery. They will now be transferred to Trail Master Steven Shumborski, who will complete the final preparation work before installation on established bluebird trails across Southern Alberta this spring.

Providing and maintaining quality nest boxes is a key part of mountain bluebird conservation. Suitable nesting sites can be limited in open prairie environments. Properly designed nest boxes help support successful breeding for mountain bluebirds and other native cavity-nesting birds.

This project will help sustain and expand nesting opportunities throughout the region. Volunteers will begin installing the new boxes ahead of the arrival of returning birds in early spring.

MBTCS thanks the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta for supporting habitat enhancement efforts, and recognizes the ongoing contribution of volunteers who help maintain bluebird trails each year.
