As bluebirds migrate south, our work continues

As summer draws closer to fall, young Mountain Bluebirds are preparing for their first southern migration.

For our volunteers, the end of the nesting season brings a different kind of work. Trail results must be recorded, nest boxes cleaned and repaired, aging boxes replaced and supplies prepared before the bluebirds return next spring.

This work is made possible by a dedicated community of trail monitors, volunteers and donors who believe these remarkable birds deserve safe places to nest across southern Alberta.

As the bluebirds get ready to fly the coop, we are asking for your support to sustain this work and prepare for another successful season.

By becoming a monthly donor, you can provide reliable, year-round support for nest box materials, trail maintenance, public education and the long-term future of Mountain Bluebird conservation.

A community effort

MBTCS maintains a network of more than 2,700 nest boxes across southern Alberta with the support of more than 110 volunteers. In 2026, volunteers also built and installed 180 new nest boxes.

Maintaining this extensive network requires more than time and dedication. Aging boxes must be repaired or replaced, new boxes must be built and installed, trails require ongoing supplies, and volunteers need reliable information and support.

Public education is also essential. By sharing proven nest box standards, conservation information and volunteer opportunities, we can help more people understand the important role they can play in protecting Mountain Bluebirds and other native cavity-nesting birds.

Your monthly gift makes a lasting difference

We are inviting our supporters to become monthly donors.

Monthly donations provide dependable funding that helps MBTCS plan ahead and respond to conservation needs throughout the year. Your recurring gift can help support:

Nest boxes and trail supplies

Donations help purchase lumber, hardware and other materials needed to build, install, repair and replace nest boxes throughout southern Alberta.

Education and public outreach

Your support helps us develop educational resources, attend community events, connect with new volunteers and share more than five decades of bluebird conservation knowledge.

Long-term sustainability

Reliable donor support strengthens our ability to continue this work for future generations. Supporters may also contribute to the MBTCS Endowment Fund through the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta. Endowment gifts are permanently invested and generate annual funding for the Society’s work.

Small monthly gifts add up

A monthly donation does not need to be large to make a meaningful difference.

By giving an amount that works for you each month, you become part of a dependable community of supporters helping volunteers care for thousands of nest boxes and protect bluebird habitat year after year.

Monthly giving also allows MBTCS to plan projects, purchase supplies and prepare for future nesting seasons with greater confidence.

Become a monthly donor

You can make a secure monthly donation through CanadaHelps by selecting the monthly donation option.

As a registered Canadian charity, the Mountain Bluebird Trails Conservation Society provides charitable tax receipts for eligible donations.
