Bluebirds have returned for another nesting season

Mountain Bluebird spotted on March 22, 2026 in Lethbridge, Alberta, perches on top of a nest box near Lethbridge Polytechnic

Spring is beginning to arrive in Southern Alberta, and with it the return of the first Mountain Bluebirds of the season. While installing new nest boxes along his trail in the coulee behind the Lethbridge Polytechnic, volunteer Dave Watson observed an early-arriving male bluebird checking established nesting sites.

The bird was first seen at one of Dave’s existing nest boxes and then followed him as he replaced an older box nearby. The bluebird quickly inspected the newly installed structure before continuing to move through the area, even perching near equipment where Dave was working. Early sightings such as this are a clear sign that the nesting season is approaching.

Mountain bluebirds often begin returning to the Southern Alberta breeding areas in late February or early March, depending on weather conditions. Having nest boxes cleaned, repaired and installed before their arrival is an important step in supporting successful nesting. Well-maintained boxes help provide safe shelter and encourage birds to establish territories early in the season.

Mountain Bluebirds are beginning to return to Southern Alberta, signalling the start of nest box preparation season for MBTCS volunteers.

As bluebirds begin returning to their breeding areas, now is the time for landowners and volunteers to prepare nest boxes for the season. Cleaning, repairing and correctly placing boxes can make an important difference in nesting success. Readers are encouraged to review practical tips and guidance in the article “Get Your Nest Box Ready” available on the Bluebird Trails website to help ensure suitable habitat is in place as the nesting season gets underway.

Welcome spring — and welcome back, bluebirds.
